FILM - a sense of cathedral awe

Go and see the twelfth commission of The Unilever Series by the celebrated British filmmaker Tacita Dean at Tate Modern, showing until 11 March 2012.
An 11-minute silent 35mm film is projected onto a gigantic white monolith standing 13 metres tall, at the end of the cavernous, darkened Turbine Hall.
This beautiful and impressive work evokes a sense of cathedral awe; juxtaposing images from nature and urban landscapes,in a montage of black and white, colour, and hand-tinted film with the luminosity of medieval stained glass on a bright, summers day.
It is the first work in The Unilever Series devoted to the moving image, and celebrates the masterful techniques of analogue film-making as opposed to digital.
